June 12, 1970 I left my home in Ogden Utah for basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. When we arrived and deplaned we were hit with the hottest air (humidity) I had ever experienced. We could actually see heat rising from the tarmac as we walked into the airport.
After basic training I was stationed at Sheppard AFB Texas and assigned to the 3630th Flight Training Wing for 2 years. I was an administrative specialist. I would type reports and exams for the instructors who taught American, German, and Vietnamese to fly T-37 and T-38 aircraft. My second Christmas they announced base wide, anyone, civilian or military could take a mini training and fly with an instructor in either a T-37 or T- 38. I volunteered, passed the mini training and went up in a T-37. Best experience of my life up to that point.
I then transferred to Randolph AFB near San Antonio Texas. I worked for a short time in the base inspector general’s office. I typed complaint letter information on 3×5 cards as briefly as I could. I was transferred to the 12th Air Base Group (ATC) and worked in vehicle maintenance as a keypunch operator until it was determined I was actually assigned to vehicle operations. Here I maintained files, typed letters, reports and evaluations.
