By my senior year in high school I knew I wanted to join the Air Force, travel, and continue my education. With my parent’s agreement that I would not actually leave until after Christmas, I tested and was accepted into the Air Force in July 1964.

In January 1965, I left for basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX. My first duty assignment was to the 22nd Bomb Wing at March AFB, CA. Part of our wings’ mission was maintaining the schedules for the B-52 Bombers and KC-135 flights and munitions that supported our troops in Vietnam and other areas.

In 1967, I got orders for Strategic Air Command HQ Offutt NE and remained there until 1968. Working at Strategic Air Command HQ in a super sensitive area was both exciting and intimidating, but it always reinforced pride in America’s strength in military operations. I loved working with such top notch dedicated people and was proud to be part of the team. The military taught me discipline, the value of being a team player, and love of country. Joining the Air Force was a life changer for me. After my discharge I was able to complete a Master’s Degree and teach for 26 years. On every possible occasion I encourage young women to serve their country with honor and pride. I will forever treasure my memories and friendships made in the Air Force.

We honor you, Sara Beck-Garcia.
