Howard G. Roshto, nicknamed “Rusty” was born in Dry Prong, Louisiana in June 1914. He attended Louisiana State University and was an Electrical Engineer.
Rusty enlisted into the Army Air Force on February 4, 1942. After basic training he went to Officer’s Training School and then to train for combat with B-24’s in Kearns, Utah, earning his Pilot’s Wings.
Rusty was assigned to the European Theater of Operations 15th Air Force, 304th Bomb Wing, 459th Bomb Group, 757th Bomb Squadron at Giulia Field, Cerignola, Italy.
As a 1st Lt., Rusty’s role was an Executive Officer until June 27, 1946. Rusty was transferred to Fort Sheridan, IL where he met and married Evelyn Stefani. Rusty started Highland Park Electric and remained in the Air Force Reserves.
Rusty was activated to duty in September 1951 as Commanding Officer of 126th Installations Squadron, an arm of Tactical Air Force of N.A.T.O under the Command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Transferred to Headquarters of Allied Air Force, Southern Europe, N.A.T.O. Their mission: To build Air Force Bases and strengthen N.A.T.O.
During his service Rusty was awarded: Distinguished Unit Citation, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern-Campaign Medal with 9 Battle Stars (of 17 Total Operations). American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
Upon returning from active duty, Rusty continued to run his business. In 1953 he and Evelyn adopted a son, Richard Roshto. Rusty was active in the Highwood and Highland Park, IL community. Rusty was Chairman of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Troop 341, 32nd Degree Mason, Rotary Club Member, and Chairman of American Heart Association fund drives.
Howard G. Roshto died on July 12, 1963 at the age of 49 from coronary heart disease.
