Specialist Jordan Byrd served as a medic in the 101st Airborne. When his unit came under fire during an operation, Byrd watched as one of his fellow soldiers went down with a shot to the leg. Without hesitation, Byrd rushed to his aid across 30 meters of open ground, as enemy small arms and machine gun fire increased. He reached the wounded soldier, placed himself between the man and the enemy fire, and started treating him. As Byrd applied a tourniquet, enemy mortars began falling down, preventing other soldiers from coming to their aid. Several minutes passed and Byrd fearlessly remained exposed, shielding the wounded soldier and stopping his life-threatening bleeding. He saved the soldier’s life, but tragically was fatally wounded as he worked. For his inspiring heroism and unselfishness, Byrd was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. He was 19 years old.

While on patrol, his element came under intense small arms, rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he maneuvered through the enemy kill zone across 30 meters of open terrain to render lifesaving aid to a fellow comrade. Spc Byrd’s distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.”
