Arriving in Saigon in the earliest days of 1966, Sergeant George Mike Mabe spent nearly the entire year serving in Vietnam. As part of a combat unit with the 101st Airborne Division, much of his time was spent in the bush, taking part in search-and-destroy missions and long-range patrols. In his memoir, he offers matter-of-fact descriptions of his daily life in Vietnam, including small but important details such as the logistics involved in heating canned rations or sending letters home. Mabe’s photographs–which, he explains, were taken while he was stationed in rear areas, away from combat—further illuminate the activities and typical experiences of a combat infantryman.
