At eighteen and half years old, Maureen Hughes left her home in Orange, California to begin boot camp for the U.S Navy. After graduation for boot camp she was selected to attend an “A” school in Disbursing. In January of 1974, Maureen was assigned with the rank of Disbursing Clerk Seaman to the Navy Accounting and Finance Center in Washington, DC. This duty station services the entire metropolitan Washington DC area for payroll and travel. For the remainder of her military career Maureen was stationed in Washington DC.
She advanced in rank and on June 16, 1977 earned the rank of a Disbursing Clerk Petty Officer Second Class. One of the highlights of her military career was being an active part of the military payroll conversion. The military converted from manual payroll cards to the Joint Uniform Military Payroll System. Military payroll had entered the computer age.
After having received A National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal, Maureen was honorable discharged from the U.S. Navy on August 15, 1977.
After the military she had a career working as a civilian with the U.S. Government. She is also a loving wife, mother and a delightful grandmother.
