A Fort Leonard Wood fireman was awarded the Secretary of the Army’s Award for Valor during the 4th Quarter Awards of Excellence ceremony held Nov. 5 in Lincoln Hall Auditorium.
William Allis, station chief, received the award for his heroic actions in saving two women from perishing, after they had fallen into raging floodwaters on Aug. 6, 2013 in Waynesville, Missouri.
In addition to Allis, more than 70 individuals and 20 groups were singled out for various efforts and achievements.
“The reason this is such a great place to live is not because of the quality of life programs, it’s not really because of any policies or recognitions, it’s not because of any manmade or natural resources,” said the host of the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Mark Spindler, U.S. Army Military Police School commandant. “Those are all good things, but it’s really all about the people.”
Allis exemplified those people. With no regard for his own safety, he dove into the water, helping the women hold onto a tree branch until help arrived, according to the citation.
“Fire captain Allis’ extraordinary heroism and selflessness at the risk of his own life reflect great pride upon him, Fort Leonard Wood and the Department of the Army,” wrote John McHugh, Secretary of the United Stated Army.
