2017-10-24 Grant
She was born on April 15, 1919 to the late John W. Spencer and Lula Oliver Booth in Philadelphia. Her nickname, “Kitty,” was given by eight siblings. Her family affectionately addressed her as “Aunt Kitty.”
She was educated at the Joseph Singerly Elementary School, now known as Frederick Douglass Mastery School. She graduated from William Penn High School, and completed Berean Institute with honors. Following graduation, Grant enlisted into the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. After being honorably discharged, she applied and was employed by the U.S. Marine Corp installation and worked there until her early retirement in 1975 at age 55.
She was briefly married to R. Grant and this union produced her only child, Dennis. He was the apple of his mother’s eye. Dennis traveled with his mother visiting every state in America, as well as Bermuda and other islands. He attended Central High School where he excelled. He graduated magna cum laude from the Temple University School of Engineering. Grant was proud of her son.
We honor you, Evelyn Grant.
