In 1968, Karen Foss was inspired to take a break from her profession as a Senior Recreation Leader for the City of Huntington Beach, California to join the U.S. NAVY. Upon completion of Recruit Training at Bainbridge, MD, Karen was honored at graduation with Commendation for Outstanding Military Achievement. She reported to Photographer’s Mate Class “A” School, Pensacola, Florida. Completing “A” School, she received orders to the Photo Lab at NAS Patuxent River, Md. She would complete her tour of duty as a PH2 at this duty station. Petty Officer Foss received a Command Letter of Appreciation upon discharge for her leadership and involvement in promoting activities for women on base. She served as the President of the Women’s Inter-service Recreation League serving women in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines based in the Washington D.C. Area. In addition to insuring WAVES had the opportunity to compete and win in inter service sporting events throughout the region, she served as the only female member of the Base Competitive Rifle Shooting Team. The Team won the 1970 Washington D.C. Shooting Championship. Karen returned to her career as a Public Administrator serving Cities and Counties for the next 25 years.
